Park bows in apology after South Korea's World Cup failure

Korea Football Association Vice President Park Hang-seo extended a deep apology after the national team exited the group stage of the 2026 World Cup.

The press conference took place at the team's base in Zapopan, near Guadalajara, Mexico, on 28/6. As Vice President of the Korea Football Association (KFA) responsible for the national team, Park Hang-seo was the first to address the media.

"On behalf of the federation, I extend our deepest apologies for failing to meet public expectations at the 2026 World Cup", Park stated. "The team members made every effort to prepare for the tournament, but the results did not reflect the fans' unwavering support."

South Korea was in Group A, first defeating the Czech Republic 2-1, then losing 0-1 to co-hosts Mexico and South Africa. The "Taegeuk Warriors" finished third in their group, leading to their elimination, and ended the tournament in 34th place among 48 teams.

"I believe the KFA must prepare for the future through serious self-reflection and criticism to restart after overcoming this period of decline", the KFA Vice President added. "I thank the fans for their unwavering support throughout the tournament and once again bow my head in apology."

Immediately after, Park Hang-seo stood up and bowed 90 degrees in apology. This also served as a gesture of farewell to the reporters before he left the press conference room.

The next segment featured coach Hong Myung-bo, who announced his resignation.
