Pogba sheds tears upon signing with Monaco

The 32-year-old midfielder Paul Pogba was moved to tears as he signed a two-year contract with AS Monaco, marking his return to professional football after a lengthy ban for doping.

In a video released by Monaco on 28/6, Pogba bowed his head and wept as he read through the contract. The French midfielder signed a page, then continued to cry and was comforted by those around him.

Overcome with emotion, Pogba could only manage to say, "Thank you for this trust." The 2018 World Cup winner concluded the announcement video with the phrase 'La renaissance', promising a resurgence in his career at Monaco.

Pogba's last appearance on the field was for Juventus in a draw against Cremonese in Serie A on 14/5/2023. He played only 9 matches for Juventus after returning to the club from Manchester United in the summer of 2022. Subsequently, the 32-year-old received an 18-month ban for doping.

Although his ban was reduced, Juventus terminated his contract in November 2024. He was cleared to play again from March 2025 but had to wait until the summer transfer window to sign with Monaco.

Despite a more lucrative offer from a Saudi Arabian club, Pogba prioritized staying in Europe. His goal is to compete for a spot on the French national team for the 2026 World Cup in Canada, the US, and Mexico.

According to French newspaper L'Equipe, Pogba will earn a 2.5 million USD annual salary at Monaco, significantly less than the 10 million USD he earned at Juventus. He will wear the number 8 shirt at his new club.

A few days before signing with Monaco, Pogba spoke to French television channel TF1. "I'm ready mentally and physically, and I'm eager to start again," the 1993-born midfielder said. "I'm 32, but I still feel like a kid."

Pogba also criticized Juventus's treatment of him since the positive doping test. He repeatedly asserted that he unknowingly ingested the banned substance and at one point considered retirement. "I asked to train with the fitness coach. I had the right, and I was still part of the team at that time," he explained. "They didn't treat me well, they didn't support me, and I was shocked. I don't understand why."

Pogba won four consecutive Serie A titles with Juventus between 2012 and 2016. In the summer of 2016, he set a transfer record of 118 million USD when he returned to Manchester United, where he won the 2017 Europa League but also faced criticism for his performance and conduct.

With the French national team, Pogba has scored 11 goals in 91 matches and was a key player in their 2018 World Cup and 2021 Nations League victories.
