PSG signs goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, paving the way for Donnarumma's departure

PSG has reached an agreement to sign goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier from Lille, signaling Gianluigi Donnarumma's likely exit.

According to ESPN, PSG will pay USD 64 million for Chevalier, which includes a USD 47 million transfer fee and USD 17 million in add-ons. Chevalier will sign a 5-year contract, lasting until the summer of 2030. The French goalkeeper completed his medical in Paris, and an official announcement is expected today.

This transfer paves the way for Donnarumma to leave Parc des Princes this summer, despite his significant contribution to PSG's historic 2024-2025 season.

PSG is reluctant to have two top-tier goalkeepers competing for the starting position. Chelsea, Manchester United, and Inter Milan are reportedly interested in Donnarumma and have contacted his agent, Enzo Raiola.

Donnarumma has one year left on his contract, earning nearly USD 1 million per month, among the highest at the club. The Italian goalkeeper wanted a raise and contract extension, but PSG declined.

Under sporting director Luis Campos over the past two years, PSG has implemented a new salary structure with a lower base salary and higher performance-based bonuses, which Donnarumma didn't accept.

Donnarumma joined PSG on a free transfer from AC Milan in 2021 and has played 161 matches across all competitions. Last season, he made crucial saves against Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Arsenal, helping PSG win their first Champions League title. However, manager Luis Enrique prefers a goalkeeper with better distribution and footwork, which are Chevalier’s strengths.

Chevalier joined Lille's youth academy in 2014 and was promoted to the first team in 2021. During the 2024-2025 season, he played a key role in Lille's Champions League run, was voted Ligue 1's best goalkeeper, and was named to the Ligue 1 Team of the Year.

Chevalier has made 99 Ligue 1 appearances with 36 clean sheets and a save percentage of over 72% last season. He has won Ligue 1, represented France at the U16, U18, U20, and U21 levels, and received his first senior national team call-up in 11/2024. At 23, his reflexes, footwork, and consistency make him one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers.

Chevalier is one of two players PSG has agreed to sign this summer, following center-back Ilya Zabarnyi from Bournemouth for USD 78 million. Zabarnyi, born in 2002 in Kyiv, Ukraine, stands at 1.89 m tall. He developed at Dynamo Kyiv and joined Bournemouth in 1/2023.

In the 2024-2025 Premier League season, Zabarnyi was a key defender for the southern England club, starting 35 out of 36 matches. He is also a Ukrainian international, having played in Euro 2020 and the 2022 World Cup.

PSG recently returned to training after losing to Chelsea in the FIFA Club World Cup final. Luis Enrique's team will begin their season by competing for the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham at Bluenergy Stadium, Italy, on 13/8.
