Dubai's malls are offering runners a cool respite from the summer heat with free indoor running events. Taking advantage of the air-conditioned spaces before stores open, the program runs throughout August when average temperatures range from 40 to 50 degrees Celsius.

Last weekend, over 500 runners sporting "Dubai Mallathon" t-shirts participated in 2.5 km, 5 km, and 10 km races inside Dubai's City Centre Mirdif. The event included group warm-ups, and all participants received medals and gift bags.
"The goal is to encourage everyone to exercise, especially walking and running, even during the summer," said Fouzeya Faridoon, head of social activities at the Dubai Sports Council.
9 malls across the city are open for running and walking, encouraging residents to be active for 30 minutes daily throughout the month, despite the oppressive heat. The initiative utilizes the spacious, cool, and accessible mall environments before shops open to the public.
One participant said she would never exercise outdoors in the summer, but the mall races are a much better option. "We have air conditioning, first aid, water, everything you need," she said. "Seeing other people exercising also motivates you."
The UAE is experiencing one of its hottest summers on record. This year, the country recorded its hottest April ever, followed by two consecutive days of record-breaking temperatures in May. In early August, the temperature reached 51.8 degrees Celsius, just shy of the national record of 52 degrees Celsius.
