Thailand fell short of its goal of reaching the final, losing to Indonesia in a penalty shootout during the semi-finals. This marks the second consecutive third-place finish for Thailand, following the same result in 2023. Previously, they were runners-up in 2019 and 2022.
"We've talked about transcending Southeast Asian football," Thairath stated. "But the recent U23 results show we haven't yet surpassed the region. When will we reach new heights?"

Siam Sports added, "Thai football boasts a professional league and a club system considered more developed than other countries in the region. However, the national team's achievements haven't truly risen above the Southeast Asian level."
The 2025 AFF U23 Championship did showcase some emerging Thai talent, including forward Yotsakorn Burapha, defenders Phichitchai Sienkrthok and Saphon Noiwong, and goalkeeper Sorawat Phosaman. However, these players still require further development.
"The loss in Indonesia will help the players understand where they stand," Thairath commented. "We must admit that the current generation is weaker, lacking the potential and strength to overcome Vietnam or Indonesia."
According to Thairath, the main reason for this is that 90% of the current players aren't regular starters for their clubs, from Thai League 1 down to the lower divisions. Limited playing time hinders their development, confidence, and experience, not to mention the quality and intensity of their play. Upon joining the national team, the coaching staff has to rebuild the players' fitness and tactical understanding.
Key moments of Thailand's semi-final loss to Indonesia in the 2025 AFF U23 Championship at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on 25/7/2025.
Thailand's familiar short-passing, possession-based style was absent in the tournament. Siam Sports criticized the U23 team's poor passing ability. Despite having more potential than the Philippines in the third-place match, Thailand had less possession. In the semi-final, they were completely outplayed by hosts Indonesia.
"Excessive caution made Thailand look like they were facing an Asian powerhouse against the Philippines," Siam Sports commented. "This reflects a lack of confidence among the players."
With these shortcomings exposed, Thai media hope the team will improve for the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Cup qualifiers in September and the 33rd SEA Games in November, both of which will be held in Thailand.
