Heading into the final matchday of Group D, China holds the top spot with 4 points, followed by Australia (3), Iraq (2), and Thailand (1). This scenario benefits China, who only need a draw against Thailand to secure advancement. A loss would require them to hope for a draw in the Australia versus Iraq match. Thailand, however, faces a must-win situation, regardless of the other game's outcome.
Should Thailand win and Australia draw, resulting in a three-way tie with China at 4 points, head-to-head records would determine qualification. Australia previously defeated Thailand 2-1 but lost to China 0-1. Consequently, a victory for Thailand against China, by any score, would place them above at least one of their direct rivals.
This marks the inaugural encounter between Thailand and China in the U23 Asian Cup finals. A failure to win would see Thailand replicate their 2018 performance, where they lost all three group stage games. Conversely, China has the chance to complete the group stage undefeated for the first time in the tournament's history.
China has demonstrated defensive solidity, having not conceded a goal in the tournament. Coach Antonio Puche lauded his players' performance, stating, "We are fully focused on one opponent at a time. The players are very happy with their progress, but a coach like me must remain calm because Thailand is very strong and will cause many difficulties."
Conversely, Thailand's coach, Thawatchai Damrong-Ongtrakul, acknowledged China's superior physicality and stamina. However, he emphasized that any team, when backed into a corner, can spring a surprise. "We fight with all our might even if there is a 1% chance," he stated. "This young squad has performed beyond expectations. For instance, against Iraq, we conceded first but persistently fought back to equalize and nearly secured a victory."
The final matchday of Group D also marks the conclusion of the U23 Asian Cup 2026 group stage. In the quarterfinals, the Group D winner will face South Korea, the second-place team from Group C, while the Group D runner-up will play Uzbekistan, Group C's top team.
