Tottenham holds Liverpool to a draw

Richarlison's late goal secures a 1-1 draw for Tottenham against Liverpool in round 30 of the Premier League.

Tottenham entered the match facing significant squad challenges. Coach Igor Tudor could only register seven substitute players, including two goalkeepers, as the London club had 13 players absent due to injuries or other reasons. The Croatian coach was forced to adapt his tactics, opting for a 4-4-2 formation for the away game at Anfield.

On Liverpool's side, coach Arne Slot made several lineup changes to rest players for the Champions League round of 16 second leg against Galatasaray on 18/3. 17-year-old talent Rio Ngumoha made his first Premier League start, with Mohamed Salah on the bench.

Despite a 5-match losing streak in the Premier League and a recent 2-5 defeat to Atletico in the Champions League, Tottenham started the game quite confidently. Dominic Solanke consistently pressed Liverpool's defense, while a powerful long-range shot from Souza forced goalkeeper Alisson to push the ball over the crossbar early in the match.

While creating an even game, the away team conceded due to a defensive error. In the 17th minute, a Tottenham player fouled Alexis Mac Allister approximately 30 m out, giving Liverpool a free-kick with a wide shooting angle. Dominik Szoboszlai took a run-up and unleashed a powerful curling shot towards the goal. Guglielmo Vicario got a hand to the ball but could not save it; the Italian goalkeeper's positioning was considered questionable.

Despite trailing, Tottenham persistently defended deep whenever Liverpool controlled the ball, forming a "yellow wall" in front of their goal. This approach gave the home team superior possession but only resulted in unclear chances. Vicario partially redeemed himself with an excellent diving save, pushing Cody Gakpo's shot onto the post.

In the second half, the match became tense and physical, though the technical quality was not particularly high. Tottenham played on the counter-attack and came close to an equalizer, as Richarlison bypassed Virgil van Dijk but could not beat Alisson in a one-on-one situation.

When Liverpool failed to score a second goal, anxiety began to spread throughout Anfield. That concern became a reality in the 90th minute, as Randal Kolo Muani assisted Richarlison, who finished into the near corner to beat Alisson, sealing the 1-1 draw.

Richarlison became the first away player to score two goals in the 90th minute at Anfield in Premier League history (in 2023 and 2026). The Brazilian forward increased his tally to 5 goals at Anfield in the Premier League, a record only surpassed by Andy Cole (8 goals) for the most away goals scored against Liverpool in the competition.

For Liverpool, this was their eighth goal conceded from the 90th minute onwards in the Premier League this season, marking their worst record in a single season and surpassing the 7 goals conceded in the 2010-2011 season.

The 1-1 draw increased pressure on coach Arne Slot, as Liverpool missed the opportunity to claim fourth place from Aston Villa – a club that lost 1-3 to Manchester United in an earlier match. Meanwhile, coach Igor Tudor relieved pressure by helping Tottenham secure their first point after 4 consecutive losses across all competitions. However, the Croatian coach's tenure remains uncertain ahead of their next match against Nottingham Forest on 22/3.
