‘Touchline tornado’ Thanh Nha returns

After recovering from injury, midfielder Nguyen Thi Thanh Nha is back with the Vietnam women’s national team for the Southeast Asian Football Championship, which kicks off today.

Thanh Nha, 23, has played for Vietnam since 2019. With her speed, powerful dribbling, and enthusiastic play, she has earned the nickname "Touchline Tornado" from fans.

The Hanoi native has made 37 appearances for the national team, scoring 7 goals, and played a key role in winning two consecutive SEA Games gold medals in 2021 and 2023. She has also participated in numerous regional and continental tournaments, including the Asian Games.

Thanh Nha also scored a memorable goal against Germany in a friendly match on 24/6 ahead of the 2023 World Cup. "That's probably a goal I'll never forget, because it's not easy to score against such a strong team," she said.

However, at the peak of her career, in late 2024, Thanh Nha suffered a knee injury that sidelined her for an extended period, causing her to miss several domestic and international tournaments.

For nearly half a year, Thanh Nha diligently underwent treatment and rehabilitation at the Vietnam Football Federation. "I was fortunate to have the support of experts and doctors," she said. "Thanks to them, the recovery process went according to plan."

At the 2022 Women's Asian Cup in India, despite being affected by Covid-19, Thanh Nha and her teammates persevered and reached the quarterfinals.

The team then defeated Thailand and Taiwan in the playoffs to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in history, held in 2023 in Australia and New Zealand.

Vietnam's number 19 midfielder highly regards the opponents and advises her teammates to stay focused and alert. "Now, not only the Philippines but also Indonesia have naturalized players, so they are very strong. Australia is bringing their U23 team, but they are also formidable. Therefore, we have to give our best," she commented.

Besides football, the 23-year-old also enjoys fashion, travel, and exploration. She is often invited by major brands for advertising campaigns.

At 7 p.m. today, Vietnam will play their opening match against Cambodia. Captain Huynh Nhu said playing at home is an advantage but also carries significant pressure. "Hopefully, with the support of fans in Hai Phong and across the country, we will achieve a good result," the veteran striker said.

2025 Southeast Asian Football Championship schedule.

After recovering, Thanh Nha was immediately called back to the national team by coach Mai Duc Chung to participate in the 2025 Southeast Asian Football Championship on home soil.

"I've missed a few tournaments, so I need to regain my form and fitness. I hope everything goes smoothly so I can contribute more to Vietnamese women's football," she enthusiastically shared before the tournament.

The 2025 Southeast Asian Football Championship features 8 teams. Vietnam is in Group A with Thailand, Indonesia, and Cambodia. The U23 Australia, Timor Leste, Philippines, and Myanmar are in Group B.

Group A matches are taking place at Lach Tray Stadium (Hai Phong), while Group B matches are at Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho).
