Representing the host nation, Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino brought the trophy to the podium for the Chelsea players after the final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, on 13/7.
Infantino then stepped aside, seemingly suggesting Trump do the same. However, the former president remained on stage as captain Reece James and his teammates celebrated their victory.

Just before the trophy lift, midfielder Cole Palmer appeared to ask James why Trump was still on stage. The English defender then turned to Trump and asked, "Are you going to leave?"
Trump seemingly replied, "I'm going to celebrate with you," and continued clapping.
In an interview with DAZN, Palmer admitted to being confused by Trump's presence during the trophy lift. "I knew he was going to be there, but I didn't know he was going to be on the stage when we lifted the trophy," the midfielder said.
Chelsea, owned by a group led by American billionaire Todd Boehly, has ties to the US. Boehly joined Trump, Infantino, and PSG president Nasser el-Khelaifi on stage after the match.
Prior to the trophy ceremony incident, Trump was booed when he appeared on the big screen during the playing of the US national anthem before the final. After the match, he was further jeered while accompanying Infantino during the awards ceremony.
Security at the stadium was heightened due to Trump's presence, with secret service agents positioned at the gates. While entry lines were slow, no major incidents occurred, other than the match starting approximately 8 minutes late.

Trump's motorcade entered through a special entrance adjacent to the players' entrance. He and his entourage exited their vehicles under a curtained tent about 30 minutes before the game.
Joining Trump in the VIP area were Infantino, American football legend Tom Brady, and media mogul Rupert Murdoch. Members of Trump's former cabinet, including former Attorney General Pam Bondi, former Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, and former Homeland Security Director Kristi Noem, were also present.
