On the Prince Abdullah Al Faisal pitch, UAE conceded two goals in the 39th and 62nd minutes, scored by Nguyen Le Phat and Nguyen Dinh Bac. Junior Ndiaye and Mansoor Al Menhali equalized in the 42nd and 68th minutes. However, in extra time, the team's fitness waned, allowing Vietnam to exert pressure. Pham Minh Phuc scored the decisive goal with a shot from inside the penalty area in the 101st minute.
This marks the fourth time UAE has been eliminated in the quarterfinals, their best performance in the U23 Asian Cup. In this year's tournament, before their match against Vietnam, the West Asian team defeated Qatar 2-0, lost to Japan 0-3, and drew 1-1 with Syria.
"We aimed for the semifinals but were unsuccessful," Coach Marcelo Broli stated at the post-match press conference. "However, I am proud of the players' dedication. We will return home with peace of mind."
Before the match, the Uruguayan coach recognized Vietnam's strength in transitions and counter-attacks. He instructed his players to adopt a cautious approach, even ceding ball possession to Vietnam. His team then sought counter-attacking opportunities through long passes aimed at their taller forwards.
This strategy created challenges for Vietnam. "Everything unfolded according to our plan," Broli commented. "Vietnam is strong in transitions, and we denied them any chances."
Coach Broli is renowned for his expertise with youth teams. He previously guided Club Penarol (Uruguay) to victory in the U20 Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club competition for that age group. In 2023, Broli led Uruguay to their first U20 World Cup title.
According to Coach Broli, UAE must increase its focus on international youth tournaments to build a strong foundation for its national football program. "These tournaments provide opportunities for young players to develop and advance to the National Team," he explained. "The experience gained, along with facing challenges, will foster their confidence."
