Dieter Senft, nicknamed "El Diablo" (the Red Devil), is a vibrant, costumed presence at the Tour de France, the annual road cycling race held in France each summer. At 73, the veteran German fan has only missed the race once, in 2012, due to health reasons. Armed with his trident, red suit, horned helmet, and boundless energy, he made his 32nd appearance at this prestigious race.
Hailing from East Germany, Senft's dream of witnessing the Tour de France was once stifled by the Berlin Wall. In 1993, he debuted at the race in his "Red Devil" costume, quickly becoming a recognizable and beloved icon of the Tour de France. He's known for his leaps alongside the peloton, his uphill runs, and his devilish expressions.
Living a simple life near Berlin with his wife of 52 years, Senft sleeps in his truck throughout the month-long Tour de France. Despite increasing difficulty getting close to the racers, the "Red Devil" remains steadfast, dancing along the roadsides as a living symbol of unwavering loyalty and passion.
