Vietnam faces UAE in the quarter-finals of the U23 Asian Championship 2026. Vietnam advanced to the quarter-finals as Group A winners, a historic achievement for a Vietnamese men's national football team at an Asian-level tournament. Their path to the top of the group included victories over Jordan (2-0), Kyrgyzstan (2-1), and host Saudi Arabia (1-0).
In contrast, UAE secured second place in Group B after a more challenging journey. They defeated Qatar 2-0, lost to Japan 0-3, and managed a 1-1 draw with Syria in their final match, a result just sufficient for them to progress.
Physically, UAE holds an advantage over Vietnam, a common trait among many West Asian teams. The average height of UAE players is 1,793 m, ranking them fourth from the bottom in the tournament. Vietnam's average height is 1,765 m, placing them second to last, only taller than Thailand. Both teams have similar average ages, with UAE at 22,13 years and Vietnam at 22,22 years, placing them among the older teams in the competition.

Over recent years, UAE has actively sought players of mixed heritage, even recruiting them early to enable naturalization after five years of residency. This policy is evident in the UAE national team and also impacts their U23 squad, which features four such players: Leonard Amesimeku, Solomon Sosu, Richard Akonnor (of Ghanaian descent), and Junior Salif Ndiaye (French). Coach Kim specifically highlighted Ndiaye as a player the Vietnamese defense should be wary of.
Historically, UAE has a clear advantage in head-to-head matches at this level, having won 5 and drawn 3 of their 8 encounters across all competitions. The first match between the two teams was a 0-0 draw in the group stage of Asiad 14 in Busan, South Korea. The other two draws were a 1-1 friendly in 2019 and another 0-0 in the group stage of the U23 Asian Championship 2020.
Vietnam's first loss to UAE occurred in the round of 16 at Asiad 17 in Incheon, South Korea, in 2014. Two years later, Coach Toshiya Miura’s squad suffered another 2-3 defeat in the U23 Asian Championship group stage, despite goals from Nguyen Cong Phuong and Nguyen Tuan Anh. In 2018, under Coach Park Hang-seo, Vietnam lost 3-4 in a penalty shootout for the bronze medal at Asiad 18 in Indonesia. Vietnam also lost their two most recent encounters, with scores of 0-3 in 2022 and 0-4 in 2023, both in friendly matches.
This marks the fourth time both Vietnam and UAE have reached the U23 Asian Championship quarter-finals. Vietnam's best performance in the tournament was reaching the final in 2018, while UAE has never advanced beyond the quarter-finals to reach the semi-finals. The winner of this match will progress to the semi-finals on 20/1, where they will face either Uzbekistan or China.
