At the Milano Skating Arena on 10/2, several athletes reported scratches and damage to their skate blades. The issue was caused by the anti-slip surface of the medal podium. Among those affected were US team gold medalists Madison Chock and Evan Bates. Japan's silver medalist, Kaori Sakamoto, immediately stepped off the podium to inspect her blades despite still celebrating, prompting the Japanese delegation to file a complaint.
Italy's bronze medalist, Marco Fabbri, also noted the problem on 10/2. "We didn't notice anything unusual while standing on the podium. It was only when we stepped down that everyone felt something strange, like small stones clinging to the blades," Fabbri said. "We couldn't move or skate; the blades felt stuck. We had to resharpen them. It was quite uncomfortable."

Skate blades are crucial for figure skaters' performances, enabling the intricate spins, turns, and jumps characteristic of the sport. Athletes rarely replace their blades, considering it a last resort that significantly impacts performance, as they need time to adapt to new equipment. Instead, they typically use sharpening stones to remove scratches and burrs.
Recognizing the severity of the issue, a representative for the organizers announced, "During the team figure skating medal ceremony, the anti-slip surface of the podium damaged the athletes' skates. The organizers are replacing this surface to prevent recurrence. We apologize for this inconvenience and are committed to continuing to provide the best conditions for the athletes."
Properly sharpened blades are essential for executing fluid movements. Their thickness and sharpness are often customized to each athlete's style, preference, and feel. Skaters also fine-tune their blades to match specific ice conditions, optimizing grip and speed.
To mitigate the incident's impact, the Winter Olympics organizers will provide a skate blade sharpening service for affected athletes or those who request it. Additionally, officials are arranging extra practice sessions for the teams as compensation, ensuring better preparation before their competition days.
