Kathmandu's Hilton hotel, a symbol of Nepal's tourism ambitions, destroyed by fire

Once a prominent landmark in Nepal's capital, the Hilton Kathmandu has been gutted by protesters.

Located in the Naxal district, the 64-meter-tall Hilton Kathmandu featured a glass facade inspired by Buddhist prayer flags, its colors shifting with the light. The architecture blended with the surrounding landscape, one side facing the urban bustle of Kathmandu, the other overlooking the Langtang mountain range. Hilton

The hotel offered 176 rooms, ranging from standard rooms to suites. The smallest rooms measured approximately 37 square meters, while the largest, the presidential suite, spanned 179 square meters. Most rooms boasted views of the Himalayas. Hilton

The Hilton Kathmandu (pictured before the fire) stood as a symbol of Nepal's aspirations to elevate its hospitality industry to international standards. The hotel, which began construction in 2016 and opened in 2024, represented a 57 million USD investment.

On 9/9, Nepali protesters set the 5-star hotel ablaze. Images and drone footage circulating on social media on 10/9 revealed the extent of the damage, with one side of the building engulfed in flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky. Kathmandu fire officials reported that most of the hotel's infrastructure and assets were destroyed (pictured after the fire).

The arson followed large-scale protests that erupted in Nepal the previous day. Tens of thousands of people, primarily Gen Z (those born between 1997 and 2012), took to the streets of Kathmandu to express their outrage after the Nepali government blocked access to most social media platforms. The government claimed these companies had failed to register and comply with government oversight.

The hotel's five dining areas served local and international cuisine in a casual bistro setting. The lobby housed a grab-and-go eatery, while the 13th floor boasted an open kitchen restaurant (pictured) with made-to-order dishes.
