The Hilton Kathmandu (pictured before the fire) stood as a symbol of Nepal's aspirations to elevate its hospitality industry to international standards. The hotel, which began construction in 2016 and opened in 2024, represented a 57 million USD investment.
On 9/9, Nepali protesters set the 5-star hotel ablaze. Images and drone footage circulating on social media on 10/9 revealed the extent of the damage, with one side of the building engulfed in flames and thick smoke billowing into the sky. Kathmandu fire officials reported that most of the hotel's infrastructure and assets were destroyed (pictured after the fire).
The arson followed large-scale protests that erupted in Nepal the previous day. Tens of thousands of people, primarily Gen Z (those born between 1997 and 2012), took to the streets of Kathmandu to express their outrage after the Nepali government blocked access to most social media platforms. The government claimed these companies had failed to register and comply with government oversight.
