For over a year, 35-year-old Greek-American Michael Zervos woke up in a new country almost every morning. His world tour, which began in early 2024, took him to nearly 200 countries in 499 days, earning him the Guinness World Record for the "Fastest time to visit all sovereign nations (recognized by the United Nations)".
However, Michael's trip wasn't just about breaking records or sightseeing. He embarked on this journey to fulfill his Project Kosmos, conceived during the pandemic, aiming to connect people from diverse cultures through stories of joy. His central question in every country was, "What was the happiest moment of your life?".

He documented their responses in videos, capturing individuals of all ages and backgrounds. They smiled or shed tears as they recounted precious moments: cuddling a beloved pet, receiving the keys to a new home, or reuniting with their mother after a long absence.
Michael explained that his experience with depression during the pandemic, and witnessing similar struggles in others, inspired him to document stories of happiness across the globe.
Michael, a Detroit, Michigan resident, spent 18 months planning the trip, keeping it a secret from friends and family, fearing it might not materialize. However, he received enthusiastic support and encouragement from potential sponsors and previous record holders.
His journey began on 15/1/2024 with a flight to Paris and then Russia. He kept a daily journal, writing on his first flight, "I told myself that everything I've planned for a year is now starting. It's time to execute".
After Russia and Turkey, Michael traveled through Africa. Starting in Chad on 23/1, he journeyed north to Libya and Egypt. He connected with locals and fellow travelers, who introduced him to new cuisines, ancient sites, and engaging conversations.
He described African markets as a "marathon of flavors", expressing gratitude for experiencing local culture through food and people. Strangers often "welcomed him like an old friend", offering assistance with transportation and accommodation.
Arriving in the Middle East on 24/5, Michael visited Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Cyprus, and Greece, where he spent time with family and visited his grandfather's birthplace. In early June, he traveled through Saudi Arabia, Oman, Iran, Syria, and the UAE, visiting "stunning religious sites" and vibrant cities.
On 19/6, Michael arrived in China, visiting the Great Wall. He shared a "wonderful" experience cooking and enjoying local cuisine with a new friend. He was impressed by Mongolia's vast, untouched landscapes. South Korea and Japan offered an "explosion" of flavors at street food stalls.

Michael described Vietnam in his July 5th journal entry as "a perfect blend of tourism, history, and community". In late July, he visited Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Myanmar, and Malaysia.
He spent the rest of the summer exploring islands in Indonesia, the Philippines, Guam, Micronesia, and the Marshall Islands, where he was "particularly impressed by the people's kindness". He befriended a Marshallese woman who reminded him of his late grandmother. He hadn't had the chance to say goodbye to his grandmother before she passed away. At the airport, a tap on his shoulder revealed the woman, determined to see him off.
Michael's next destinations were Oceania and other Asian countries. He described his journey through Central Asia as "where beauty meets decay," calling it "one of the most surreal and thought-provoking legs of the trip".
In November, he reached Eastern Europe, traveling through Serbia, Bulgaria, and Hungary, where people generously shared their time and insights. He spent Christmas 2024 in Norway, enjoying Christmas markets in the snowy weather. "Snow gently covered the statues, creating a serene, ethereal atmosphere", he wrote, calling it one of his most memorable holidays and a reminder of feeling welcomed even far from home.
In late February of this year, Michael completed his European journey, visiting North Korea and expressing surprise at the locals' friendliness. He then flew to France before heading to South America on 9/3, visiting Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Argentina. Despite battling altitude sickness in Bolivia, he was captivated by its colorful cities, unique culture, and wrestling shows. On 30/5, he completed his journey to all sovereign nations, feeling a mix of exhaustion and gratitude.
Upon returning home, his friends and family greeted him at the baggage claim. "It was the perfect ending to a long and memorable journey," Michael said.
