A wedding amidst the floods after Typhoon Wipha in the Philippines

Despite heavy rain flooding the church after Typhoon Wipha, a couple in Bulacan held their wedding, creating a memorable moment amidst the floodwaters.

Some guests placed their leather shoes on the pews to keep them dry.

Heavy rains following Typhoon Wipha have caused widespread, severe flooding in many areas of the Philippines.

The rain flooded the Barasoain Church in Malolos, Bulacan province, on 22/7, the very day Jade Rick Verdillo and Jamaica Aguilar were to be married.

The couple anticipated the risk of flooding, but instead of letting the weather derail their special day, they decided to proceed with their wedding amidst the floodwaters.

Outside the Barasoain Church, the floodwaters were almost knee-deep. The bottom of Aguilar's wedding dress was completely soaked, floating in the water.

Wedding guests rolled up their pants and waded to their seats inside the flooded church.

Around 20 typhoons hit or pass near the Philippines each year, devastating many areas and impacting the lives of Filipinos, especially in July and August.

The couple has been together for 10 years. "The challenges will continue. This is just a test, one of the many difficulties we have been and are still trying to overcome," Verdillo shared.

In other areas, tens of thousands of people were evacuated as river levels rose after Typhoon Wipha.

The church was flooded as Verdillo and Aguilar's wedding took place. Despite the adverse weather, close friends and family waded through the floodwaters to attend the ceremony.

Aguilar waded to the altar at the Barasoain Church.

"We chose to get married today because this itself is a sacrifice. If we postponed the wedding, we might have to sacrifice even more," Verdillo said.

Verdillo held Aguilar's hand as they waded to the altar. He wore an embroidered Barong Tagalog shirt, traditional formal wear for Filipino men at events like weddings and state functions.

Verdillo and Aguilar exchanged a kiss, surrounded by their bridesmaids and groomsmen.

"Despite the wind and the rain, the wedding went on. Love has prevailed. This is a truly special wedding," guest Jiggo Santos said.
