Australian governor-general to visit Vietnam

Australian Governor-General Sam Mostyn and her husband will make a state visit to Vietnam next week.

The visit will take place from September 9-12 at the invitation of President Luong Cuong and his wife, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Ms. Mostyn became Australia's governor-general in July 2024 and is a member of the ruling Labor Party.

The governor-general serves as the representative of the British monarch in Australia. The governor-general performs constitutional duties including formally appointing the prime minister and ministers, calling elections, and granting royal assent to bills passed by parliament.

Australia and Vietnam established diplomatic relations on 26/2/1973. The two countries became Comprehensive Strategic Partners in March 2024. Bilateral trade in 2024 reached 14.1 billion USD, a 2.3% increase compared to 2023. Australia is currently Vietnam's 7th largest trading partner, and Vietnam is Australia's 10th largest.

As of the first half of 2025, Australia has 864 investment projects in Vietnam with a total capital of 3.38 billion USD, focusing on manufacturing, information and communications technology, and accommodation services. Vietnam has 93 investment projects in Australia with a total capital of 551 million USD.

Australia is one of Vietnam's largest bilateral non-refundable ODA (Official Development Assistance) partners. In March 2025, Australia announced ODA for Vietnam for the 2025-2026 fiscal year of 96.6 million AUD (over 63 million USD). In the 50 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, Australia's total ODA to Vietnam has reached over 3 billion AUD (over 1.97 billion USD).

Nearly 500,000 Australian tourists visited Vietnam in 2024, making Australia one of Vietnam's top 10 tourism markets. The Vietnamese community in Australia numbers approximately 375,000, the 5th largest foreign-born community there.
