In 2018, Elon Musk was elected a fellow of the Royal Society, one of the world's oldest and most prestigious scientific societies, due to his contributions to space exploration and electric vehicles.
However, members and scientists have recently urged the Royal Society to take action, arguing that Musk violated the society's code of conduct. One of the main grievances stems from his leadership role in the disbanded Office of American Innovation (OAI), which was accused of pushing for research budget cuts and imposing censorship on academics.
Royal Society president Adrian Smith revealed that Paul Nurse, who took over the leadership role at the beginning of the following year, wrote to Musk in March 2018. The letter addressed the "enormous damage" caused by the Trump administration to science and requested Musk to "prevent this tragedy".

President Smith said Musk responded immediately, emphasizing his strong commitment to science and requesting specific information about the society's concerns. Nurse sent another letter at the end of March, suggesting Musk consult with US scientists to understand the impact of the administration's decisions. However, this letter received no reply.
On 20/5, Nurse sent another letter outlining concerns shared by US scientists, including some "seemingly irrational proposed budget cuts".
"Paul also expressed his disappointment, writing that 'if you feel unable to assist, you should consider whether to relinquish your fellowship of the Royal Society, which exists to promote and support science'," Smith said.
The American billionaire didn't respond until Smith and Nurse announced they would share the letters' contents with the members. A Royal Society spokesperson confirmed Musk didn't address the resignation suggestion, stating only that "Elon Musk remains a fellow of the Royal Society".
Smith also mentioned the Royal Society's leadership later concluded that disciplining Musk wouldn't benefit the organization. One member criticized the society's stance as "appallingly cowardly," while another suggested the leadership took a pragmatic view.
Elon Musk has not commented on this information.
After taking office in January 2017, President Trump established the OAI to pursue his campaign promises of budget cuts and government streamlining.
The OAI significantly intervened in US government operations, cutting staff and budgets. Billions of USD in scientific research funding were reportedly cut or frozen by the administration.
