Chinese state broadcaster CCTV aired a program last week featuring designers discussing the similarities and differences between the J-35 carrier-borne fighter and its air force counterpart, the J-35A. They revealed some components are designed for both variants, streamlining the development process.
The program also showcased a J-35 model with folded wings and a tailhook for carrier operations, along with an internal bay capable of holding 6 missiles. While the specific type of missile remains undisclosed, observers believe the J-35 can carry the PL-15 air-to-air missile, which has a maximum range of 300 km.

"The J-35's design prioritizes stealth and beyond-visual-range combat," said Zhang Zhonghao, an expert at the Shenyang Aircraft Design and Research Institute, the J-35's developer.
Zhang emphasized the J-35's close-combat capabilities, enhancing pilot survivability and target destruction. According to Zhang, the J-35 can launch from the Fujian aircraft carrier, equipped with electromagnetic catapults, as well as the Shandong and Liaoning, which use ski-jump launch systems.
Ai Zhiqiang, involved in the J-35A's design, noted the J-35's naval-standard cockpit and customized software, distinct from the J-35A. The J-35's control stick is centrally positioned, while the J-35A uses a side-stick.

Developed from the FC-31 prototype by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, the J-35 is smaller than the J-20 but incorporates China's most advanced stealth technologies and avionics.
Both J-35 variants appeared in the Beijing military parade earlier this month. Chinese officials hope the J-35 will not only rival but also surpass the American F-35 stealth fighter.
