Chinese millionaire's wife refuses divorce despite husband's terminal illness

Duan Rui, whom millionaire Cai Lei fell in love with at first sight, has refused to divorce him, choosing instead to accompany her husband on his journey of healing from paralysis caused by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Cai Lei, 48, one of China's most prominent patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), has bravely battled the disease for the past seven years. His wife, Duan Rui, 37, has been his steadfast companion and supporter, offering unique assistance while also becoming a source of emotional strength for many other families facing ALS.

Born and raised in Beijing, Duan Rui displayed an independent and somewhat stubborn nature from a young age. When a high school teacher suggested she pursue social sciences at Peking University, she remained determined to choose natural sciences, aspiring to contribute to world-changing scientific advancements.

Duan Rui was admitted to Peking University, where she focused her research on anti-cancer studies at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences. After graduating, she joined the external affairs department of an international medical company.

During this time, Duan Rui discovered her passion for research but a dislike for social interactions. She furthered her education in accounting, transitioning to a career in the field and eventually becoming a partner at an auditing firm.

Duan Rui met Cai Lei through a matchmaking service in 2018. At the time, Cai Lei was an "Internet tycoon," having pioneered China's first electronic invoices in 2013 and serving as vice president of JD.com, one of China's largest e-commerce companies.

Cai Lei fell in love with Duan Rui at first sight. Their conversations about physics and life sciences resonated deeply with him, as he had once dreamed of becoming a scientist.

During their second date, Cai Lei proposed to Duan Rui. He stated he had no time for a lengthy courtship and suggested they "get straight to the point." Initially, Duan Rui suspected he might be trying to deceive her, but she ultimately accepted his proposal. They had no honeymoon and did not even take time off for their wedding.

"I don't like wasting time on a sentimental romance. It's best to embark on a journey together rather than constantly having to prove our love for each other," she said.

One year later, shortly after Duan Rui gave birth to their only son, Cai Lei was diagnosed with ALS in 2019. He proactively offered a divorce, not wanting to burden her, but Duan Rui firmly refused.

"I can't even give her a hug when she feels sad," Cai Lei once expressed his regret over his inability to care for his wife.

Cai Lei and Duan Rui embarked on a path of ALS research and treatment. They have invested over 100 million yuan (15 million USD) into researching new therapies and supporting fellow patients.

In 2022, Duan Rui left her job at the auditing firm and co-founded the livestream channel "Tram Pha Bang" with Cai Lei. She hosts live broadcasts five days a week, sharing information about ALS and selling products to raise funds for research and treatment.

"My platform is generating income that frees scientific research from the pressure of survival," she stated.

Cai Lei's condition progressed faster than anticipated. He is now fully paralyzed and unable to speak. All communication is done through eye-tracking technology, allowing him to command a computer to type.

Duan Rui has argued with her husband many times, urging him to rest, but Cai Lei persists in working 12 hours a day. Cai Lei has always admired his wife's independence. While other patients' family members wait for their loved ones during hospital treatments, she uses this time to take online finance courses.

After hiring a full-time personal assistant, Cai Lei helped Duan Rui focus on her individual career. They work independently during the day and enjoy time together in the evenings. Duan Rui also sent their son to her parents for care.

"Why should I feel guilty for not taking care of my husband or managing household chores? Can't I pursue my career and live a fulfilling life with joy? I hope other patient families can also feel empowered and freer," Duan Rui expressed.

She does not want to be perceived as a "pitiful wife" of a patient with a severe illness. While Cai Lei's story garnered widespread public attention, Duan Rui chose to maintain a more private profile.

"Cai Lei is extraordinary, and Duan Rui is equally outstanding," one netizen commented.

"Duan Rui is wise, ambitious, and incredibly reliable. She goes far beyond being just 'the woman behind' her husband's success," another user expressed.
