"I informed the president about an hour ago that I have decided to resign as prime minister," Paluckas said in a statement today, also announcing he would step down as leader of the Social Democratic Party.
Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda later confirmed Paluckas's resignation. Paluckas, leader of the center-left Social Democratic Party, came to power after the parliamentary elections in late 2024. His cabinet is expected to resign en masse following his announcement.
Several Lithuanian newspapers recently published investigative articles about Paluckas's past financial and business dealings. Lithuanian anti-corruption agencies then launched an investigation into the related allegations of misconduct.

Lithuanian media further intensified the pressure by reporting that Paluckas had not paid most of a 19,000 USD fine related to the 2012 "rat poison scandal."
In this case, Paluckas was found guilty of misconduct in the bidding process for rat extermination services in Vilnius, when he was the city's administrative head. The Lithuanian Supreme Court ruled he had abused his position by awarding the contract to the highest bidder. He was sentenced to two years in prison, with a one-year suspended sentence, but ultimately did not serve any time.
Paluckas resigned before the Lithuanian opposition could initiate impeachment proceedings. Lithuania will soon begin negotiations to form a new ruling coalition and cabinet.
Paluckas denied the allegations against him, calling them part of a "concerted attack" by political opponents.
"Despite my decision to resign, I will continue to defend my honor and dignity and I am waiting for the conclusion of the investigation, which I am sure will distinguish the truth from the slander," he said.
