In an article titled "Vietnam's three decades in ASEAN: A testament to unity and shared progress," published on 8/8, Malaysian prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, the 2025 ASEAN chair, highlighted Vietnam's 30th anniversary of joining ASEAN, coinciding with the bloc's 58th anniversary.
"As Malaysia charts the way forward under the Kuala Lumpur declaration, we also reflect on Vietnam's impressive journey as an ASEAN member over the past three decades," he wrote.
Since joining ASEAN in 1995, Vietnam has become an integral pillar of the bloc's collective efforts. Vietnam has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to ASEAN's shared goals and values, playing a vital role in strengthening unity and cohesion, especially during periods of global uncertainty and change.
Whether responding to the Asian financial crisis, managing public health emergencies, or navigating complex geopolitical landscapes, Vietnam has consistently upheld the principles of consensus and collective resilience, forming the foundation for the region's shared success, prime minister Anwar noted.
According to the Malaysian prime minister, Vietnam's commitment to upholding ASEAN centrality is evident through its active participation and insightful leadership.

Vietnam's two ASEAN chairmanships, in 2010 and later in 2020 at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, are a testament to its steadfast leadership and forward-looking vision.
Under Vietnam's leadership, ASEAN maintained cohesion, fostered constructive relationships with major external partners, and promoted the inclusive, "outward-looking" approach that has shaped the region's identity, according to Mr. Anwar.
Prime minister Anwar said Vietnam also played a key role in strengthening ASEAN's credibility and global standing. From promoting the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation to advancing economic integration through crucial initiatives like the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), Vietnam helped position ASEAN as a driving force for peace, stability, and shared prosperity.
These efforts demonstrate a deep and consistent commitment to a rules-based regional order, founded on mutual respect, dialogue, and cooperation.
"Looking ahead, I believe ASEAN stands at the cusp of transformation and renewal, built upon a vision of shared progress, prosperity, and equity. We are no longer bystanders in global affairs, but a dynamic and influential entity, capable of driving positive change. As prime minister Pham Minh Chinh rightly observed, ASEAN is a region of 'great vitality,' and I fully share this sentiment," he wrote.
To realize this vitality, prime minister Anwar suggested ASEAN needs to deliver more concrete outcomes to bolster regional resilience and sustainability, including accelerating cooperation in sustainable energy development.
Additionally, ASEAN must continue to collaborate in priority areas such as digital innovation, food security, and climate change resilience.
"Vietnam's journey over the past three decades is a testament to what nations can achieve together when they share a common vision, belief, and commitment. I have full confidence in the next chapter of our shared endeavors, where Malaysia and Vietnam will stand shoulder to shoulder, serving our region and our peoples," Mr. Anwar emphasized.
