A massive flood surged through the tourist town of Dharali in the mountainous state of Uttarakhand, northern India, on the afternoon of 5/8. Video footage of the tragedy shows a wall of water, mud, and debris cascading down the mountainside, demolishing homes and shops in its path. Many people tried to flee before being engulfed by the floodwaters.
At least 20 people were rescued after the mudslide. India launched a large-scale search and rescue operation, deploying hundreds of military personnel. So far, officials have confirmed 4 deaths and approximately 100 people missing.
This is an area with many hotels and restaurants. Around 10 hotels were swept away.
"Search and rescue efforts are underway with all available resources," said Indian army spokesman Suneel Bartwal.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the mudslide occurred after sudden heavy rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued a red alert in the area, recording "extremely heavy" rainfall in some isolated areas.
Deadly floods and landslides frequently occur in parts of India during the southwest monsoon season from June to September. Experts say the climate crisis and urbanization are increasing the frequency and severity of these events.
