"Appalling. Seeing this elderly man assaulted makes my blood boil. I am so sorry this happened. These robbers must face the fullest consequences for their actions," San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan wrote on X on 7/9, referring to the robbery of a jewelry store in San Jose last weekend.
The robbery occurred at Kim Hung Jewelry in San Jose, California, on the afternoon of 5/9. Video from the store's security camera shows a group of robbers dressed in black, wearing masks, ramming a car through the glass storefront, and rushing inside. The group, armed with axes and hammers, smashed display cases, swept jewelry into bags, and ordered everyone in the store to "sit down".
The 88-year-old store owner was terrified as the robbers rushed towards him. As he tried to stop them from looting and vandalizing his store, one of the robbers shoved him to the ground. The remaining employee in the store, fearing for their safety, raised their hands in surrender and huddled in a corner.
Minutes later, upon hearing a car horn honking outside, the robbers fled the store. Chris Moore, a friend of the Kim Hung Jewelry owner, said the owner suffered a stroke after the attack and also sustained cuts from broken glass. The owner is now in stable condition and has been discharged from the hospital.
Moore estimated the damage to the store between 50,000 and 100,000 USD. However, the store owner and authorities have not confirmed the value of the stolen jewelry.
The San Jose Police Department is investigating the incident, and no suspects have been arrested yet. Police said the suspects, one of whom was armed with a gun, fled the scene in multiple vehicles.
