Shooting at US army base

A soldier opened fire, injuring 5 fellow soldiers at a military base in Georgia before being apprehended.

A shooting occurred at the US Army's Fort Stewart in Georgia on 6/8, prompting a lockdown of the base. Emergency responders were quickly deployed.

The suspect, a soldier, was apprehended at 11:35 a.m., nearly 40 minutes after the lockdown was initiated.

"Upon witnessing the shooting, soldiers on the scene did not hesitate to subdue the soldier, allowing law enforcement to apprehend him," Brigadier General John Lubas, the base commander, said.

The incident resulted in 5 soldiers being injured. All are in stable condition and expected to recover. The suspect has been identified as Sergeant Quornelius Radford, but the motive remains unclear.

Brigadier General Lubas stated that Radford is believed to have used a personal handgun rather than a military-issued weapon.

US President Donald Trump called the incident a "senseless act of violence," adding that the US Army Criminal Investigation Command would ensure the perpetrator "is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law." Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth called the shooting "cowardly" and pledged that "justice will be swift for the perpetrator and anyone else found to be involved."

Fort Stewart, located approximately 50 km southwest of Savannah, Georgia, was established in 1/1941. The base serves as a training and deployment site for active and reserve US Army units and is home to the 3rd Infantry Division. Over 25,000 personnel work at the base and nearby Hunter Army Airfield.

Shootings, some related to terrorism, occasionally occur at military facilities in the US, a nation grappling with gun violence.

In 2019, a US sailor shot and killed two people and wounded another at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii. That same year, a Saudi Arabian military trainee killed three people at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida.

According to the Gun Violence Archive (GVA), a non-profit organization that tracks gun violence incidents, approximately 260 mass shootings have occurred in the US this year.
