Xiao Song Yi's love for water began in childhood, starting swimming and diving at the age of 7. He aspired to be a diving coach, but an injury at 19 forced him to retire.
"I was lost at the time, but decided to continue my education, believing university would foster personal growth," the 22-year-old shared in an interview on 8/8.
Xiao's foray into merman performance began serendipitously. "In 2023, while performing in a diving show in Harbin, the aquarium needed a male performer for their upcoming mermaid show. I had just received my certification, so they invited me to audition," Xiao recounted.
Initially worried about performing in front of an audience, Xiao found that the experience unlocked his talent for underwater performance.
Lacking experience and reputation, Xiao faced rejection from many companies early on. Undeterred, he persisted with training, honing his physique and learning folk and classical dance to choreograph underwater movements. Since starting, he has performed 300-500 shows.
Xiao balances his studies with performances, sometimes traveling to other cities for early morning events before rushing back to Wuhan for classes. During the school year, he often works weekends, earning about 2,500 yuan (350 USD) per day.

Now, Xiao has a long-term contract with a Wuhan aquarium, where his performances are a major draw. During the peak summer season, he performs up to 5 shows a day, each lasting 10-15 minutes, holding his breath for about 40 seconds per dive.
People travel from afar to see Xiao perform. He often interacts with children, drawing hearts in the water, waving, and blowing kisses. "I feel like I'm making their fairytale dreams come true," he said.
Xiao describes his dances as "conveying masculine strength through grace." "Male performers are still rare in the mermaid world. I believe a merman offers a striking contrast, providing a fresh perspective and showcasing the diversity of these performances," he explained.

Videos of Xiao's performances have gone viral, with many praising his physique.
"A man who is self-aware and disciplined enough to work on his fitness is truly captivating. Those muscles are incredible!", one commenter wrote.
"I want to go see this right now! Where is this aquarium?", another inquired.
