Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea said the suspect, a Michigan resident, was apprehended after the July 26 stabbing. He did not release the suspect's name but said authorities believe he acted alone.
The attack occurred near the checkout area, and the suspect apparently used what appeared to be "a common folding-style knife". Bystanders at the store subdued him.
Witness Julia Martell said she heard screaming, then saw the man with a knife shoving and stabbing people as he moved through the store. She described "blood everywhere".

Shea said the suspect appeared to target people at random. No Walmart employees were injured.
Munson Healthcare, a northern Michigan hospital system, reported treating 11 victims. Six were in critical condition and five were seriously injured.
FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino said agents were on the scene assisting with the investigation.
"Our hearts go out to the victims and community reeling from this senseless act of violence," Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said. "I’m grateful for the quick action of those who apprehended the suspect."
Walmart spokesperson Joe Pennington declared the "violent act unacceptable" and thanked those who subdued the suspect.
