Trump and first lady wear black, appear solemn in Christmas photo

In the Christmas photo released by the White House, the U.S. President and his wife are not smiling, dressed in black formal wear, with a Christmas tree in the background.

The photo, taken on 7/12 in the Cross Hall, shows Trump in a black tuxedo with a white shirt. Melania Trump wears a black gown, her hair down, accessorized with diamond earrings and a bracelet.

"President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump extend their Christmas greetings," the White House stated when releasing the photo and message.

"This holiday season is a time for us to reflect on the blessings we share. For nearly 250 years, our nation has thrived on the hope and diligence of families who believed in something greater than themselves. Their example inspires us today, especially at Christmas, as we gather with loved ones to celebrate the faith, family, and freedom that have shaped our national story."

Trump holds his wife's hand, his expression serious. Melania also does not smile. The photo's backdrop features sparkling lights from a Christmas tree. In previous Christmas photos, predecessors like Obama and Biden smiled brightly instead of maintaining a solemn appearance, and former first ladies also did not typically choose black attire.

The reason for Trump and his wife's lack of smiles in the photo remains unclear. Some suggest this solemn image aims to reinforce the message issued by the White House.

This year, Melania decorated the White House with the theme "Home for the Holidays." The Christmas tree features classic white lights, ribbons, red, white, and blue ornaments, golden stars, butterflies, and a 54 kg gingerbread White House model.
