Deputy prime minister and foreign minister Bui Thanh Son held talks with Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi on 14/8 while attending the 10th Mekong-Lancang Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Yunnan province, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The deputy prime minister suggested both sides continue high-level exchanges, promote defense and security cooperation, enhance cooperation effectiveness in various fields, promote balanced and sustainable trade development, and make science and technology cooperation a new highlight.
Deputy prime minister Bui Thanh Son expressed his hope for increased exchanges and mutual support within multilateral frameworks. Vietnam values Mekong-Lancang cooperation, highly appreciates China's contributions and the joint efforts of Mekong countries over the past 10 years, and suggested the parties focus on sustainable and effective management of Mekong-Lancang water resources.

Foreign minister Wang Yi emphasized that China is ready to coordinate to implement high-level common perceptions. China is willing to promote economic and trade cooperation, expand imports of Vietnamese goods, accelerate transport infrastructure connectivity, increase high-quality investment, expand cooperation in science and technology, AI, digital economy, environmental protection, commercial aircraft, strengthen power connectivity, contributing to each country's growth targets.
The Chinese foreign minister highly valued Vietnam's contributions and role within the Mekong-Lancang cooperation framework. He proposed member countries strengthen coordination, elevate Mekong-Lancang regional cooperation to new heights, expand into new fields, bring benefits to the countries, and contribute to peace, cooperation, development, and prosperity in the region.
Regarding maritime issues, the two sides agreed to manage disagreements effectively and maintain peace and stability in the South China Sea. Deputy prime minister Bui Thanh Son suggested both sides respect each other's sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction in maritime areas in the South China Sea established in accordance with international law. He further urged avoiding unilateral actions that complicate the situation, properly handling issues related to fishing vessels and fishermen, and persistently resolving disputes and disagreements through peaceful measures.
The two sides also exchanged views on several international and regional issues of mutual concern.

Deputy prime minister and foreign minister Bui Thanh Son met with Lao foreign minister Thongsavanh Phomvihane on the same day.
The two leaders highly appreciated the momentum of development in bilateral relations, emphasizing the maintenance of high-level visits and meetings to guide the relationship. They agreed to continue close coordination and thorough preparation for high-level activities and bilateral cooperation mechanisms.
Both sides affirmed they would promote bilateral cooperation mechanisms, making economics a true pillar of the relationship. They committed to enhancing coordination and mutual support in international, regional, and sub-regional forums, working with member countries to maintain solidarity and strengthen ASEAN's central role in effectively responding to common challenges.
