At an event in Hanoi on 28/7 commemorating 30 years of Vietnam's ASEAN membership and the bloc's 58th anniversary, deputy prime minister and foreign minister Bui Thanh Son said Vietnam welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached by Cambodian and Thai leaders after talks in Malaysia.
The deputy prime minister considered this an important first step towards de-escalation and restoring peace.
Amidst complex global developments, countries need to continue promoting the values of dialogue, cooperation, multilateralism, and the rule of law, especially maintaining peace, security, and stability – prerequisites for ensuring sustainable growth and shared success within the ASEAN Community.

The unconditional ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand took effect at midnight on 29/7. Both sides agreed to resume direct dialogue at the prime minister, foreign minister, and defense minister levels, as well as to hold informal meetings between military leaders in the border region.
Leaders from the US, EU, and the UN also welcomed the ceasefire, hoping both sides would adhere to the agreement in good faith, creating a favorable environment to resolve outstanding issues and work towards lasting peace.
Fighting between Cambodia and Thailand erupted near the Ta Moan Thom Temple on the morning of 24/7 and later spread to other areas along the border. This was the most serious clash between the two neighbors in over 10 years, resulting in a total of 38 deaths: 25 in Thailand and 13 in Cambodia.
