Seventh grader assaults teacher in Hanoi

A seventh-grade student at Dai Kim Secondary School grabbed his homeroom teacher's hair and pushed her head down to retrieve a confiscated toy.

In a report submitted to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training on 19/9, Dai Kim Secondary School in Dinh Cong ward reported the incident, which occurred at approximately 3:15 p.m. on 16/9. Just before recess, the homeroom teacher of class 7A14 noticed a female student holding a sharp toy and asked her to hand it over.

The male student who owned the toy, seated behind the girl, immediately intervened. Video footage from the classroom's security camera shows him grabbing the teacher's hair, pushing her head down, and even knocking her to the ground. The two-minute ordeal ended when the student retrieved his toy. None of the other students intervened.

The video, which circulated online, sparked outrage and disbelief.

The school met with the student's parents and required him to apologize to the teacher in front of the class immediately after the incident. Two other students, including the female student who initially held the toy, were asked to write statements. Both said they were afraid to intervene because the boy was large and holding a sharp object.

After apologizing to the teacher and the school, the boy’s family requested a 10-day suspension for self-discipline, starting that day, which the school granted.

Dai Kim Secondary School stated that they have offered support to the teacher and reminded all students not to bring dangerous objects to school, emphasizing the importance of respect and proper behavior.

Regulations prohibit students from infringing upon the dignity, honor, or physical safety of teachers. Depending on the severity, violations may result in warnings, reprimands, written self-criticism, or suspension, typically from one to four weeks.

However, the new regulations, effective 31/10, stipulate that the most severe disciplinary action for students is a written self-criticism with parental acknowledgement and commitment.
