According to Yangtse Evening Post on 6/1, Lai Yuqing died after several days of emergency treatment at a hospital in Phnom Penh. Police investigation revealed that Yuqing had been living and working in Phnom Penh before her death. The incident occurred at a three-story house. The first floor was occupied by the homeowner, while the second floor was rented by Jatla Siddartha and Li Fang, two acquaintances of Lai Yuqing. The third floor was leased long-term by a French national.

Camera footage showed the young woman falling around 0:30 on 30/12/2025. Subsequently, Jatla Siddartha and Li Fang rushed down to help her up. Police determined that Lai Yuqing, Jatla Siddartha, and Li Fang were on the same floor of the house when the incident occurred. Both were taken to the police station for questioning as part of the investigation. Authorities also collected fingerprints from the railing to determine the cause of death.
Lai Yuqing's father traveled to Cambodia after learning of his daughter's accident. He stated that she had arrived in 2024 to collaborate with several colleagues on film projects.
In an interview, Lai Yuqing once mentioned that Jatla Siddartha was an Indian producer who shared valuable professional experience with her.
On 6/1, Lai Yuqing's close friends posted a letter stating that police had arrested two individuals connected to the incident. The friends wrote that Lai Yuqing lived a vibrant life. She was brave, kind, and highly talented, recognized for her abilities in directing, screenwriting, and music.

Yuqing was born in 8/2002 in Tianjin and had studied abroad in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, and Toronto. Lai Yuqing's works were frequently screened and nominated at international film festivals.
Last year, the feature film directed by Lai Yuqing, "Whisperings of the Moon", premiered at the Busan Film Festival in South Korea. The film was set in Cambodia and featured a primarily local cast.
