David Beckham: 'children are allowed to make mistakes'

Former football star David Beckham stated his children have made mistakes on social media, emphasizing that children have the right to err as it is a way to learn, a comment made amidst ongoing public family tensions with his eldest son, Brooklyn.

David Beckham appeared on CNBC's Squawk Box program on 20/1, discussing the risks social media poses to children's mental health. He stated he frequently speaks about the good and bad aspects of these platforms, acknowledging the dangers for young users. This interview garnered attention as it marked Beckham's first public statement since his eldest son, Brooklyn, 27, criticized his parents.

Beckham then discussed his four children with designer Victoria, sharing a lesson he learned: teach children how to use social media for the right reasons. He currently uses his personal page to support his work as a global ambassador for UNICEF, viewing it as a tool to help people understand what is happening to children worldwide. The former player said he has tried to guide his children to use social media as he does. Beckham stated his children have made mistakes, but children are allowed to err. "That's how they learn. That's what I try to teach them. Sometimes, you have to let them make those mistakes", he added.

On 19/1, Brooklyn posted on Instagram, accusing his parents of "trying to control" his life, "spreading countless lies to the media", and "sabotaging their son's romantic relationship". He also declared he did not want to reconcile with his family, only wishing to live peacefully and privately with his wife, actress Nicola Peltz, 31. Brooklyn's post is currently a focal point of international media, appearing widely across numerous news outlets.

On the same day, 20/1, David Beckham attended the 56th World Economic Forum in Switzerland, marking his first public appearance after his son's public airing of their conflict. At the event, he avoided questions about Brooklyn.

Representatives for Vic-Beck have not yet responded to international news outlets regarding the recent uproar. A source for People stated that Brooklyn and his wife never wanted this public dispute, but they have encountered sufficient misleading news about Nicola. "The Beckhams had ample time to correct their mistakes and address the consequences, but instead they continued to spread falsehoods. Brooklyn and Nicola are tired of this. Brooklyn knows the truth and is ready to speak out", the source added.

Rumors of discord within the Beckham family have circulated since April 2025. Late last year, reports indicated Brooklyn blocked his parents' Instagram accounts and requested communication only through lawyers. The last time all family members were seen together in a single frame was Christmas 2024. Despite the estrangement, David and Victoria Beckham often mentioned their son in posts, expressing affection for him but omitting their daughter-in-law. Before the rift, the family frequently shared photos and videos of happy moments together.

David Beckham, born in 1975, played for clubs such as Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain. He captained the England national team from 2000-2006, retiring in 2013 at 38. Beckham has also made cameo appearances in several films. Additionally, magazines have recognized him as one of England's most stylish celebrities.
