Naomi Osaka wears sequin dress on court

Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka drew attention by wearing dazzling outfits on court at the 2026 French Open.

Pagesix reported that the 29-year-old athlete made a dazzling debut on 28/5 in Paris. She wore metallic gold sequin designs by Nike, created by Swiss designer Kevin Germanier and inspired by haute couture. The outfits were recycled from Osaka's old match attire.

In her first-round match against Germany's Laura Siegemund on Suzanne-Lenglen court, Osaka wore a sequin dress with a black sheer gown. For her second-round match against Croatia's Donna Vekic on Simonne-Mathieu court, she appeared in a sequin bomber jacket with a tiered, ivory train.

Osaka stated the designs were a tribute to France and haute couture. She expressed concern that the outfits might reflect light on the court. "Do you know the Eiffel Tower at night when it sparkles? I think I look a little bit like that", Osaka told reporters. "I was a bit scared the umpire would kick me off the court, so I had two normal Nike dresses ready as backup".

The Japanese player stated she enjoys surprising people and having them anticipate her on-court style. World number one Aryna Sabalenka praised Osaka's fashion sense on TNT Sports, commenting, "I like how she expresses herself. She feels confident, and that's the beauty of the fashion world". In contrast, Siegemund, Osaka's opponent, told Pagesix, "I'm here to play tennis, not to put on a fashion show".

Osaka is known for her unique fashion, pushing boundaries on the tennis court. Her style draws inspiration from Venus and Serena Williams, and Maria Sharapova. At the Australian Open in January, she appeared on Rod Laver Arena in a jellyfish-inspired gown by designer Robert Wun, paired with a wide-brimmed hat with a veil and holding a white umbrella. In 2024, she wore a tiered dress and a giant bow-tie top in a match against Jelena Ostapenko at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Naomi Osaka, 29, has a Japanese mother and a Haitian father. She is seen as a symbol of Japan's aspiration to learn, integrate globally, and reach athletic peaks. Her father moved her to Florida, US, to learn tennis when she was eight. Osaka is among the best female tennis players, the first Asian player to be world number one, and has won four Grand Slam titles.

The French Open, also known as Roland-Garros, is one of the four Grand Slam tournaments of the year. Following her second-round victory, Osaka advanced to the third round of this tournament for the first time since 2019. She will face 17th seed Iva Jovic in the next round.
