The final years of 'Home Alone' star Catherine O'Hara

Actress Catherine O'Hara, renowned for her role in "Home Alone", lived for many years with a congenital heart condition before her passing at 72.

She passed away on 30/1 at her home in Los Angeles. According to E Online, the artist was taken to the hospital in critical condition on the morning of her death. Authorities received an emergency call from her home address at 4:48 h. She died shortly after arriving at the hospital.

The star was absent from the Golden Globes awards ceremony on 11/1, despite being nominated for best supporting actress for her role as Patty Leigh in "The Studio" series, a Hollywood satire. Catherine played the former director of Continental Studios. Her character was fired before Matt Remick (portrayed by Seth Rogen) took over, later becoming Matt's advisor and helping him save the studio from bankruptcy.

Catherine O'Hara had a rare condition where her heart was on the right side, and her thoracic and abdominal organs were inverted. She often joked about her illness. In Variety last March, she stated, "There is no stronger survival instinct than that." The actress said that as a comedian, she always aimed for optimism. She inherited her sense of humor from her parents, who often made their daughter laugh at the dinner table.

O'Hara discovered her condition more than 20 years ago during a health check-up with her husband. At that time, her parents had passed away. Driving home, she "wondered about her other siblings, whether they knew where their hearts were." However, her remaining relatives did not have this condition. "I'm a weirdo," she often said.

Before her passing, she lived happily with her husband, production designer Bo Welch, and their two children: Matthew Welch, 32, and Luke Welch, 29. In Elle Canada's September 2024 issue, she mentioned rarely looking in the mirror and thinking about her age: "I feel like now, the narrative for people my age often revolves around death, divorce, and illness. So, I'm fortunate to be with people who respect older adults and offer me new experiences." O’Hara stated she never had cosmetic surgery. In Entertainment Tonight Canada in 2022, she expressed her view: "I believe we should accept, respect, and love ourselves for our age."

Catherine O'Hara was born and raised in Toronto, Canada. She joined The Second City theater troupe at 20, initially as an understudy for Gilda Radner. When Radner left to join "Saturday Night Live", O'Hara was promoted to a full cast member.

In 1976, the troupe launched "SCTV", a sketch comedy show broadcast on Global in Canada. The original cast and writers included comedic talents such as: John Candy, Joe Flaherty, Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, and Dave Thomas, with Rick Moranis and Martin Short joining later. NBC later acquired the rights to broadcast the show in the U.S.

In 1990 and 1992, she starred in the two "Home Alone" films. Catherine passionately conveyed a mother's love for her child. The scene where Kate reunites with her son Kevin after he went missing was moving, providing a complete ending to a challenging yet heartwarming journey.

The artist continued to make an impression with her role as Delia Deetz, Lydia Deetz's stepmother, in Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" (1988). The role allowed her to display her charming comedic talent and became one of Catherine's most notable characters.

In the past 10 years, the star's career saw a resurgence. With "Schitt's Creek" (2015-2020), a series co-created by Eugene Levy and his son Dan Levy, Catherine reached a Gen Z audience through her role as Moira Rose, a character who experienced a fall from wealth to difficult circumstances. At the 2020 Emmy Awards, the show won outstanding comedy series, along with acting awards for: Catherine O'Hara, Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, and Annie Murphy. In subsequent seasons, "Schitt's Creek" became a television phenomenon, airing on CBC in Canada, Pop TV in the U.S., and Netflix, winning numerous awards. In the Hollywood Reporter in 2020, Catherine mentioned that many projects she participated in garnered early attention but then faded into obscurity, but "Schitt's Creek" was an exception. According to the actress, the project developed effectively, creating anticipation for viewers, and she was not bothered by late success.
