Thu Trang's sisterly love film hits theaters early in the year

Directed by and starring Thu Trang, "Ai thuong ai men" opens the 2026 Vietnamese film season.

Set in the old Mekong Delta, the film "Ai thuong ai men" centers on the life of Hai Men (Thu Trang) and the challenging destinies of people living in the riverine region. It portrays individuals confronting significant upheaval and loss.

While the family story in "Ai thuong ai men" is not entirely new, Thu Trang tells it in a fresh way. The director bravely opts for a non-linear structure, weaving past and present through various segments of Hai Men's life, rather than following a familiar linear path.

The film's narrative does not progress in a straight chronological line; instead, it is driven by memories, pivotal events, and their long-lasting consequences. Past occurrences are not merely recounted, but serve to explain the present, helping audiences understand Hai Men's conflicted choices at each stage of her life.

The film's timeline is arranged to build audience curiosity. Each turning point in Hai Men's life is intentional, creating strong connections between different periods.

With sisterly affection as the central theme for its family narrative, "Ai thuong ai men" intertwines layers of romance, familial bonds, and human relationships. All these elements are examined through the non-linear flow of time, ultimately converging on the core value: family always serves as a steadfast anchor after every challenge.

The nostalgic atmosphere of the old Mekong Delta unfolds slowly, forming the backdrop for the story. The rhythm of river life, old ferry terminals, and traditional homes are recreated, evoking familiar scenes and fostering empathy among viewers.

Taking on multiple roles, Thu Trang expertly controls the film's pace through her portrayal of Hai Men, a resilient Mekong Delta woman who sacrifices everything for those she loves.

In addition to Thu Trang, "Ai thuong ai men" features an experienced cast alongside promising young talents. Ngoc Thuan returns to the big screen after a long absence as Kha, a carefree and somewhat rebellious Mekong Delta young master, who hides inner conflicts. The harmonious collaboration between Ngoc Thuan and Thu Trang ensures a seamless and natural emotional flow throughout the film.

Young actors Tram Anh and Vo Dien Gia Huy bring a fresh perspective to the story with their innocence and sincerity. They effectively portray their characters' journeys of growth, from early affections to confronting challenges and loss.

Supporting roles also leave a strong impression. Meritorious Artist Ngoc Hiep embodies the traditional Mekong Delta councilwoman, exuding experience and dignity. Kha Nhu and La Thanh also deliver complete performances in their signature roles, providing charming scenes that balance the film's emotional landscape.

"Ai thuong ai men" premieres on 1/1. It is Thu Trang's second directorial effort, following "Nu hon bac ty".
