Kidney cancer occurs when kidney cells grow uncontrollably, forming a malignant tumor. It is one of the 10 most common cancers in both men and women. Early detection is crucial because symptoms may not be apparent in the initial stages. However, there are some early warning signs of a malignant tumor in this organ.
Blood in the urine
Blood in the urine is a warning sign of kidney cancer. The urine may appear pink or red and can come and go or be difficult to detect without testing. However, this condition can also be caused by infections, kidney stones, or other medical conditions. Patients should seek medical attention if they detect blood in their urine to avoid serious kidney complications.
Persistent pain in the flank and lower back
Persistent pain in the flank and lower back can be caused by kidney cancer. The pain is not related to injury and usually starts as a dull ache in the lower back, spreading to the abdomen and increasing over time due to the cancer cells pressing on surrounding structures, causing discomfort and hindering daily activities.

A lump or swelling in the flank or lower back
A physical exam or self-exam may reveal a lump or swelling in the flank or lower back when kidney cancer has grown large enough. Although usually asymptomatic in the early stages, a large tumor can cause swelling, a feeling of fullness, or pressure. Imaging tests can help doctors identify the tumor.
Sudden fatigue, persistent fever, and excessive sweating
Sudden fatigue, persistent fever, and excessive sweating, especially at night, can be warning signs of kidney cancer. This is due to the body fighting the disease or the cancer affecting hormone production. These symptoms develop slowly over weeks or months, disrupting work and daily life.
Loss of appetite and unintentional weight loss
Kidney cancer alters metabolism, leading to loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss, and a diminished sense of hunger. Individuals experiencing these symptoms along with other signs should seek medical attention. Sudden weight loss can indicate that the body is fighting a disease like cancer.
Accompanying fatigue and weakness disrupts work, housework, and exercise.
