Uterine polyps cause 8 years of infertility

Lien, 39, after eight years of unsuccessful attempts to conceive, discovered she had uterine polyps. In-vitro fertilization (IVF) subsequently led to a successful pregnancy.

Uterine polyps are caused by the overgrowth of the endometrium, leading to structural changes in the uterine cavity. These polyps can obstruct the movement of sperm or embryos, impacting implantation. Larger polyps increase the risk of miscarriage. Lien underwent laparoscopic surgery to remove the polyps, followed by unsuccessful IVF treatment at another hospital.

Earlier this year, the couple sought treatment at the Fertility Support Center, Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City (IVF Tam Anh TP HCM). Doctor Nguyen Thi Thuy noted that Lien's ovarian reserve (AMH) was still good for her age. The couple was recommended IVF, combined with a thorough examination and assessment of Lien's uterus before embryo transfer to increase the chances of pregnancy.

Lien underwent ovarian stimulation and had 13 mature eggs retrieved for fertilization with her husband's fresh sperm. An AI-powered incubator system successfully cultivated three 5-day-old embryos and five 6-day-old embryos.

To mitigate the risk of polyp recurrence, Lien underwent an ultrasound before embryo transfer, which showed no abnormalities. At the end of April, when Lien's endometrial thickness reached an ideal 10 mm with a suitable structure, Doctor Thuy transferred one embryo, resulting in a successful pregnancy. Lien is currently 20 weeks pregnant and the fetus is developing healthily. The remaining embryos have been cryopreserved for future use.

According to Doctor Thuy, uterine polyps are linked to infertility in about 15-25% of women. This condition is caused by hormonal imbalances and abnormal cell regulation.

The typical treatment is laparoscopic polyp removal. However, the recurrence rate is approximately 15-30% after one year and 30-50% after three to five years. Therefore, after polyp removal, patients are advised to pursue assisted reproductive technology (ART) promptly to conceive.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI) has a success rate of about 15-20%. IVF offers a significantly higher success rate. At IVF Tam Anh TP HCM, the average pregnancy rate after embryo transfer in 2024 was nearly 79%. For women under 28, the rate was close to 85%, and for women aged 35-40, it was over 69%.
