5 natural ways to soothe mouth ulcers

Aloe vera, good oral hygiene, and salt water rinses can help reduce pain and promote healing.

Mouth ulcers vary in size and usually heal on their own within 1-2 weeks. However, they can cause persistent pain, making eating, drinking, and talking difficult. Here are a few tips to help soothe mouth ulcers.

Rinsing with salt water helps clean the ulcer and reduce pain. Saline solution has antiseptic properties that decrease bacteria in the mouth, promoting healing and preventing the ulcer from worsening. The salt also helps dry the ulcer, which can speed up the healing process. Rinse your mouth twice a day: once in the morning after brushing your teeth and again in the evening before bed. Be careful not to swallow the salt solution.

Maintaining good oral hygiene, such as brushing your teeth and flossing after meals, helps eliminate bacteria and keep your mouth clean, thus accelerating the healing process. Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid irritating the ulcer. Brushing at least twice a day and flossing after every meal contributes to overall oral health.

Include foods rich in vitamins in your diet. In some cases, mouth ulcers can be caused by nutritional deficiencies, such as a lack of zinc, folic acid, or iron. Therefore, ensure a balanced diet to provide your body with essential vitamins. Foods rich in protein, zinc, and vitamin C support a strong and healthy immune system.

Frequent mouth ulcers can also indicate a vitamin B12 deficiency. Common symptoms include tingling in the hands and feet, anemia, swollen tongue, and fatigue. Incorporate foods like fish, eggs, dairy products, and poultry into your diet to boost your vitamin B12 intake.

Aloe vera can soothe painful areas. Its anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting properties can help reduce the size of mouth sores and alleviate pain. You can apply aloe vera gel directly to the ulcer or consume it in drinks or desserts.

Chamomile tea has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that can gently soothe ulcers. Drinking chamomile tea can relieve symptoms such as stomach aches, bloating, nasal congestion, and even pain from mouth ulcers. Steep chamomile tea in hot water for 10-15 minutes and drink it when it has cooled down to avoid irritating the ulcer.

In addition to beneficial foods, avoid consuming irritating foods like spicy, acidic, salty, or hard items. While there are many ways to reduce pain and promote healing, benign mouth ulcers can sometimes be mistaken for cancerous sores. If you try these natural remedies and your symptoms don't improve within two weeks, consult a doctor for a check-up.
