Hormones are chemical messengers that control sleep, metabolism, stress, and reproductive health. Signs of hormonal imbalance often include mood swings, hot flashes, irregular periods, and excessive hair growth. A healthy lifestyle, balanced diet, and certain teas can contribute to natural hormone balance.
Green tea
The potent antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in green tea helps protect cells and supports metabolism (how the body uses energy) and hormonal health.
Drinking green tea can help manage blood sugar levels, improve insulin sensitivity, and promote weight loss. These benefits can be advantageous for those with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition linked to high levels of androgens (male hormones), which can cause acne, excess hair growth, and irregular periods in women. It's best to drink green tea after meals and in the morning to avoid sleep disruption and potential stomach upset.

Peppermint tea
Caffeine-free peppermint tea, with its mildly sweet flavor, is rich in compounds that may counteract androgens. This can lead to reduced testosterone, acne, and hair growth in individuals with PCOS. Regularly consuming peppermint tea may also help manage weight and blood sugar, increase follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), reduce anovulation (lack of ovulation), and promote more regular menstrual cycles.
For each cup of tea, 5 to 10 fresh peppermint leaves can be used, but gently crushing them first releases more flavor. Steep the leaves in hot water for 5 to 7 minutes, then strain. Enjoy the tea plain or add honey and lemon for enhanced flavor and benefits.
Spearmint tea
Spearmint, a member of the mint family, has a refreshing aroma. The tea leaves provide antioxidants and calming compounds like terpenes and flavonoids. Drinking spearmint tea may balance female hormones, reduce menstrual cramps, and regulate periods. Spearmint tea is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Licorice root tea
Licorice root can reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) and support adrenal health, which can be beneficial for those with chronic fatigue syndrome. Licorice root contains plant compounds similar to estrogen, which can help balance testosterone levels, making it potentially useful for those with PCOS. Regularly drinking licorice root tea can also help manage hot flashes and promote bone health during menopause.
Chasteberry tea
Chasteberry tea may reduce premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms like breast tenderness and irregular periods, and it may also improve fertility. This tea is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, or for those with hormone-receptor-positive breast or ovarian cancer.
