According to Dr. Thach Thi Hoang Dung from the Dermatology and Cosmetic Dermatology Unit at Tam Anh General Clinic, District 7, poor skin condition isn't solely due to genetics or age but also stems from everyday skincare habits. Dr. Dung highlights seven common detrimental habits.
Over-washing your face
Many believe that washing their face more frequently leads to cleaner skin. However, Dr. Dung cautions that this habit can do more harm than good. Washing more than three times a day or using harsh cleansers can strip the skin of its natural oils, causing dryness, irritation, and increased sebum production. It's recommended to wash your face twice daily, morning and night, using gentle products suited to your skin type.
Over-exfoliating
Exfoliating removes dead skin cells, cleanses pores, and stimulates cell renewal, resulting in brighter, more even-toned skin. However, over-exfoliating (3-4 times a week) or using harsh products can thin the skin, making it sensitive, sun-prone, and susceptible to premature aging. Exfoliate only 1-2 times per week with a product appropriate for your skin type.

Forgetting to remove makeup
This is a common skincare oversight. Neglecting makeup removal before bed allows makeup, sunscreen, and dirt to accumulate, clogging pores, contributing to breakouts, and accelerating aging.
Skipping sunscreen
According to Dr. Dung, sunscreen can prevent aging and dark spots. Many people only apply it when going outside or use too little, minimizing its protective effects. Applying sunscreen daily, even indoors, and reapplying every 2-3 hours is advisable. When outdoors, combine sunscreen with protective clothing for optimal skin protection.
Using unsuitable cosmetics
Different skin types, such as oily, dry, or sensitive, have unique characteristics and care requirements. Choosing products based on trends or using too many layers of skincare and makeup can clog pores and lead to breakouts.
Instead of following trends, Dr. Dung recommends prioritizing products suited to your skin type. If you have underlying skin conditions, consult a dermatologist for guidance on proper product usage to maintain healthy and safe skin.
Insufficient sleep
Healthy skin depends not only on cosmetics but also on lifestyle. Lack of sleep or chronic stress can disrupt hormone balance, leading to dull skin, breakouts, and premature wrinkles. Maintain 7-8 hours of sleep per night and a relaxed mindset for healthy, firm, and youthful skin.
Self-treating skin conditions at home
Many individuals, upon encountering skin issues like acne, dark spots, or scars, resort to self-medication with over-the-counter creams or pills without professional consultation. Dr. Dung warns that this can be risky, potentially causing infections, severe scarring, and dangerous complications. Consult a dermatologist for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
