A syndrome causes a young man to have over 200 hairs per square centimeter on his face

Suffering from the exceptionally rare hypertrichosis syndrome (only 50 cases recorded since the Middle Ages), 95% of 19-year-old Lalit Patidar's face is covered by an incredibly dense layer of hair.

Last year, Guinness World Records recognized Lalit Patidar as "The World's Hairiest Man Alive". Professional examinations revealed his hair density on the head and face reached 201,72 hairs/cm2. Currently, approximately 95% of Patidar's face is covered by a thick layer of hair.

"For me, being different is part of my identity. It makes me unique and always stand out, even among millions of people," Patidar said on 9/3.

According to medical experts, hypertrichosis is an exceptionally rare medical condition. It is estimated that the incidence rate is only about one in a billion people. Since the Middle Ages, global medical literature has recorded only about 50 similar cases.

This syndrome is characterized by excessive hair growth anywhere on the body, affecting both males and females. In congenital cases like Lalit's, science explains the cause as an "error" in the evolutionary process: genes that stimulate hair growth, long "locked" by the human body, are suddenly reactivated while the fetus is still in the womb. Additionally, the condition can also have a late onset in adults due to medication side effects, eating disorders, or autoimmune diseases.

Carrying a massive amount of facial hair not only creates a distinct appearance but also presents a challenging biological barrier. Lalit states that the dense hair obscures his vision, affects his hearing, and frequently causes entanglement, hindering daily eating.

Modern medicine has not yet found a definitive cure or specific preventive method for this syndrome. Symptom control relies entirely on manual methods. Lalit cannot use a regular razor but must periodically use scissors to trim the fastest-growing hair around his nose, chin, and behind his ears. Although doctors can prescribe electrolysis or laser therapy to eliminate hair follicles, the effectiveness remains very limited for severe congenital cases.

With his distinct appearance, Lalit's childhood was turbulent, marked by instances of being pelted with stones and subjected to cruel mockery. However, instead of surrendering to an incurable condition, the 19-year-old chose to change his perspective.

Currently, Lalit Patidar is not only a record holder but also a social media star with hundreds of thousands of followers. He regularly shares about his daily life and his journey of managing his unique appearance, thereby raising community awareness about rare diseases. He believes that understanding and respect from society are the most important medicine for those with different appearances.
