Amnioinfusion saves 25-week-old fetus

Doctors at Can Tho City Maternity Hospital performed an amnioinfusion to save a 25-week-old fetus experiencing slow growth and low amniotic fluid.

This was the fifth such procedure performed at the hospital.

The 26-year-old, first-time mother was admitted to the hospital due to the high risk of fetal distress or stillbirth. After consultation, doctors decided to infuse a sterile isotonic solution into the amniotic sac to replenish the deficient fluid, while also collecting samples to test for chromosomal abnormalities, genetic disorders, and fetal infections.

On 12/9, Dr. Nguyen Thai Hoang, Head of the Post-Operative Department, stated that in 2024, the hospital sent a team for specialized training and invested in modern equipment to master this technique. The success not only provides a chance of survival for many high-risk fetuses but also marks a new advancement in obstetric medicine in the Mekong Delta.

Amniotic fluid is essential for fetal development. Low amniotic fluid can lead to compression, impacting lung development, digestion, and the musculoskeletal system. Amnioinfusion helps improve the fetal environment, reduce the risks of fetal distress, prolong the pregnancy, and provide more time for the fetus to mature.
