Baby girl born weighing 5,1 kg

A 32-year-old mother, 37 weeks pregnant for the second time, delivered a baby girl weighing 5,1 kg via C-section, equivalent to a two-month-old infant.

On 21/1, Viet Nam - Sweden Uong Bi Hospital in Quang Ninh announced that both the mother and baby are in good health. However, this weight is significantly higher than the average newborn weight. Typically, full-term newborns weigh between 2,5 and 4 kg. Babies born with excessively low or high weight carry certain health risks, both in the neonatal period and for later development.

Doctors advise that large newborns are often linked to several factors, including gestational diabetes in the mother, excessive weight gain during pregnancy, or a prolonged pregnancy. Therefore, pregnant women should adhere to the prenatal check-up schedule provided by medical facilities. During examinations, if the fetus shows signs of being too small or too large for its gestational age, obstetricians will closely monitor the situation and provide timely advice and interventions to ensure the safety of both mother and baby, promoting a healthy birth.

The record for the heaviest baby born in Viet Nam belongs to an infant weighing 7,1 kg in Vinh Phuc in 2017. Another baby girl in Gia Lai was born in 2008 weighing nearly 7 kg. In 2014, a 102 kg mother in Quang Nam gave birth to a 6,5 kg baby.
