Semen is typically milky white or slightly yellowish. When blood is present, it can appear bright red, dark brown, rust-colored, or as clots or small streaks. In some cases, the semen color doesn't change.
Doctor Nguyen Ngoc Tan, from the Department of Urology and Andrology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, explains that while the condition is often benign and semen color usually returns to normal, microscopic examination might still reveal red blood cells. However, if the issue persists, recurs frequently, or is accompanied by symptoms like genital pain, weight loss, or fatigue, it could signal a serious underlying condition requiring immediate medical attention.

According to Doctor Tan, this condition primarily impacts men's psychological well-being, causing anxiety, stress, and reluctance to engage in sexual activity, leading to a loss of confidence. Prolonged presence of blood in semen can cause erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, and strain relationships. If the condition stems from damage to the seminal vesicles or prostate gland, it can also affect sperm quality, reducing the chances of natural conception and increasing the risk of infertility.
Blood in semen can sometimes be a sign of cancer. Malignant conditions in the prostate, testicles, or spermatic ducts may initially present with this symptom. If ignored, the tumor can progress undetected and be discovered only in later stages, making treatment more complex and less effective. Early detection, Doctor Tan emphasizes, significantly improves treatment success rates and limits dangerous complications.
Treatment for blood in semen depends on the underlying cause. If it's due to an infection, doctors prescribe antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medication to alleviate symptoms. If cancer is involved, a comprehensive treatment plan is developed, combining medical, surgical, and radiation therapy.
Blood in semen is a symptom men should never ignore. Even a single occurrence warrants medical consultation for prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent complications and protect reproductive health.
