Dr. Vo Thi Tuong Duy from the Dermatology - Skin Aesthetics Unit at Tam Anh General Clinic, District 7, reported that Anh experienced excessive sweating even when inactive or in cool environments. The skin under her arms was constantly damp, causing discomfort and odor. This is a symptom of localized hyperhidrosis - a dysfunction of the sympathetic nervous system, often starting during puberty and persisting if not treated properly.
Body odor, especially underarm odor, in adolescents is a normal physiological phenomenon related to hormonal changes and increased activity of the sweat glands. This condition typically begins in girls between the ages of 8 and 13, and in boys between 9 and 14.

Since Anh is an adolescent with severe hyperhidrosis, Dr. Duy recommended treatment options including minimally invasive procedures such as botulinum toxin (botox) injections or endoscopic sympathetic denervation surgery. Anh opted for botox injections with local anesthesia, a procedure lasting only 20-30 minutes. Botox temporarily blocks the signals between nerves and sweat glands, reducing sweating in the treated area. The effects typically appear after a few days and last an average of 4-5 months.
Two weeks after the injections, Anh's excessive sweating significantly decreased. For long-term effectiveness, patients should receive repeat injections periodically as directed by their doctor.
Botox can also be injected to reduce sweating on the feet and hands. The injection site should be kept dry for at least 24 hours after the procedure, and strenuous exercise or activities that cause excessive sweating should be avoided. Massaging, using deodorant, or applying any other product to the treated area should be avoided for the first 1-2 days. Wearing loose, breathable clothing can help minimize friction. Some mild reactions, such as tingling or minor bruising, may occur but typically disappear within a few days.
Dr. Duy explained that in some children, body odor might disappear naturally during adulthood as sweat production decreases and the amount of bacteria on the skin reduces. However, not all cases resolve on their own. Many children with persistent underarm odor should consult a dermatologist or skin specialist for appropriate examination and treatment.
