At Tam Anh General Hospital in District 7, Dr. Le Nguyen Thuy Vy of the Dermatology and Cosmetic Dermatology Unit diagnosed Khanh with primary hyperhidrosis, a chronic condition causing excessive sweating. Hyperhidrosis often begins during puberty and can persist for years without proper treatment. Though not a serious health threat, it significantly impacts quality of life, studies, and mental well-being, especially for young people like Khanh.

Dr. Vy discussed treatment options with Khanh, including botulinum toxin (botox) injections or sympathectomy surgery. Opting against surgery, Khanh chose botox injections in the palms. Botox temporarily blocks nerve signals that stimulate sweat glands, thus reducing sweating in the area.
According to Dr. Vy, this method is safe, minimally invasive, and has almost no impact on palm sensation. However, careful consideration of dosage, injection sites, and minimizing pain or inflammation risks is crucial. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes. Noticeable relief occurs within 3-5 days, lasting 3-6 months on average. At a two-week follow-up, Khanh reported improved grip and significantly reduced sweating.
Some individuals may experience mild, temporary side effects like soreness, bruising, or slight swelling at the injection site. In rare cases, slight hand numbness, reduced grip strength, or difficulty moving fingers may occur for a few days due to the drug's potential effects on nearby muscles. These symptoms generally subside within a few days.
Dr. Vy notes that excessive hand and foot sweating can indicate primary hyperhidrosis, which is usually benign. However, it can sometimes signify underlying conditions like endocrine, cardiovascular, or neurological disorders. Individuals should seek medical attention if excessive sweating is accompanied by symptoms like dizziness, chest pain, nausea, unexplained weight loss, or profuse night sweats.
