Brazilian man's diet linked to 113-year lifespan

Joao Marinho Neto has never suffered from conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or cancer, thanks to a simple diet of free-range chicken, fresh grapes, and natural sugar.

Joao Marinho Neto, born in Maranguape, Ceara state, recently celebrated his 113th birthday on 5/10, according to People. Following the passing of British man John Tinniswood at the age of 112 in 11/2024, Neto was officially recognized by Guinness World Records as the "world's oldest living man". At that time, his exact age was 112 years and 52 days. He is currently the 26th oldest man in history.

In an interview with Brazil's TV Globo last year, Neto revealed he has followed natural and healthy eating principles for many years. Accustomed to a rural lifestyle, he doesn't adhere to strict dietary formulas but primarily consumes readily available foods like fruits, meat, and natural sugars.

Each morning, like many Brazilians, Neto starts his day with a cup of coffee. According to nurse Diulia Dara Nascimento, who cares for him at the Sao Sebastiao nursing home in Apuiares, Neto has a particular fondness for coffee. This morning ritual is followed by a light meal of fresh grapes. Grapes are not only one of his favorite fruits but are also considered a secret to his longevity, being rich in antioxidants and other nutrients.

Another important food in his diet is panela, a type of raw sugar obtained from concentrated sugarcane juice. This sugar is a traditional product in many rural areas of Brazil. Neto regularly enjoys it as part of his daily routine. Beyond being a natural energy source, panela retains minerals found in sugarcane, offering health benefits compared to refined sugar.

Neto's diet isn't limited to fruits and natural sugars. It also includes proteins such as free-range chicken. This type of meat is natural and less processed than other animal proteins, contributing to better health.

Thanks to his healthy diet, even at over 100 years old, he has never suffered from conditions like hypertension, diabetes, or cancer. When asked about his longevity, Neto smiled, stating the secret is simple. "I have always had loving people by my side, and my whole life has been lived among kind individuals," he said.

According to his son, Marcos Vinicius Marques, being around good people and maintaining closeness with loved ones are essential factors in his healthy, long life. Neto worked on a farm with his father from the age of 4, caring for livestock, harvesting fruit, and laboring throughout his life. He has 8 children (6 still living), 22 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Although he is currently the oldest living man, the title of "world's oldest living person" (including both men and women) still belongs to British woman Ethel Caterham, aged 116. Neto once sent his best wishes to Caterham, holding a blue sign written in Portuguese: "Happy Birthday!"
