Dr. Huynh Ba Tan, from the Department of Breast - Head and Neck Surgery at Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, stated that the patient experienced significant breast asymmetry after breast cancer surgery, which affected her psychologically. Delayed breast reconstruction is often prioritized to ensure cancer control first, followed by restoring breast shape for safety.
Following a multidisciplinary consultation, the surgical team agreed to perform a delayed reconstruction of Ms. Huong's right breast using a TRAM (Transverse Rectus Abdominis Myocutaneous) flap. Simultaneously, they sculpted her left breast to achieve symmetry.
The TRAM flap is a reconstruction method that utilizes autologous tissue from the abdominal wall, including skin, fat, and a portion of the rectus abdominis muscle. This technique helps create a soft, natural breast mound with high compatibility with the patient's body. According to Dr. Tan, TRAM is a suitable choice for patients who prefer not to have implants or for whom autologous tissue is the recommended option.
After the surgery, the patient recovered well. The reconstructed flap was warm and pink, and no early complications were observed. Ms. Huong began light movement and eating soon after, and she was discharged from the hospital. Upon removal of the shaping bandage, the reconstructed breast had a balanced shape, harmonious with the opposite side.

During the postoperative period, patients must strictly adhere to wound care instructions and wear the shaping bra for the prescribed duration. They should limit strenuous activity and avoid strong impacts on the breast and abdominal areas in the initial months. Regular follow-ups are essential for monitoring and continued breast cancer screening according to the established protocol.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women globally and in Vietnam. According to Globocan 2022, nearly 2.3 million new cases and 666,000 deaths from breast cancer are recorded worldwide each year. In Vietnam, there are approximately 24,600 new cases and over 10,000 deaths annually.
According to Dr. Tan, breast reconstruction not only offers aesthetic benefits but also plays a crucial role in psychological recovery and improving the quality of life for women after breast cancer treatment.
