Cataracts worsen by two grades after 7 years due to aging

Mai, 59, whose right eye had a grade one cataract 7 years ago, recently saw it progress to grade three due to aging. Surgery helped restore her vision.

When Mai's grade one cataract was initially discovered, her doctor advised her to adjust her diet, reduce phone use, and read in well-lit conditions. This August, experiencing frequent burning, dryness, fatigue, and blurred vision in her right eye while reading, she visited the High-Tech Eye Center at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. Doctor Duong Minh Phuc of the High-Tech Eye Center reported that her right eye had a cataract with 3/10 vision, while her left eye remained at 8/10.

Cataracts occur when the eye's lens becomes cloudy, obstructing light from reaching the retina and impairing vision. Typical symptoms include blurred vision, glare, halos around lights, and faded colors. According to Dr. Phuc, the most effective treatment is phacoemulsification surgery. The clouded lens is broken down using ultrasound waves, then removed and replaced with an artificial lens to restore vision.

Since Mai wanted to continue reading daily, Dr. Phuc recommended a multifocal intraocular lens. This artificial lens, designed with multiple focal points to replace the clouded natural lens, allows patients to see clearly at various distances without relying on glasses.

A week after surgery, Mai's right eye vision recovered to 9/10, enabling her to read comfortably.

Dr. Phuc attributed Mai's quick recovery to her lack of underlying health conditions, absence of prior refractive errors, and healthy lifestyle. He advised her to rest, avoid dusty and smoky environments, limit screen time, and attend regular check-ups to maintain good eye health.
